Fundraising London Marathon

Our Sales Team Leader, Simon Waterhouse is running the 2023 London Marathon.

Last year, Simon was part of a team which raised over £44k for The Christie Charity. Following this achievement, The Christie then invited Simon and Andy to take part in the London Marathon.

Simon’s friend Brad was diagnosed with osteosarcoma – a type of bone cancer. Doctors warned that Brad’s leg may have to be removed, however, as a result of the treatment received at the Christie hospital in Manchester, the tumour size was significantly reduced and was removed with an operation.

To express the gratitude for the work undertaken by Christie’s for Brad and many others in the same situation, Simon and Andy are fundraising for The Christie Charity.

A recent donation of £300.00 has proved extremely valuable in helping pupils address issues surrounding bullying. The resources have given the children the opportunity to explore their feelings about bullying and express their opinions and ideas about how it should be tackled in the school.

Apprentice Employment is back

Following the emergence of Covid back in 2020, Lattimer have not been in a position to recruit or build on its previous years of apprenticeship enrolment largely due to the close contact, face to face training that is required to be undertaken.

This year that has changed and we have recommenced this key activity. We have successfully interviewed and now welcome one new apprentice Ethan Toft to the business.

Ethan will follow the same four year academic apprenticeship route as those before him, being enrolled on the Level 3 Engineering Technicians course (machinist route - covering level 2 machining practical certificate). This will see his training and development being undertaken both at the College campus a few days a week and onsite at our facility in Southport for the remainder of the week within his 1st year.

We extend a warm welcome to Ethan and wish him good luck as he embarks on his new career with Lattimer.

Coming of Age

Lewis Irwin, Harry Kennedy Holmes and Oliver Jobe have finished their apprenticeship at Lattimer!

They have been through the most tumultuous 4-year apprenticeship one can imagine with the Covid pandemic playing its part for a good two years. Lewis, Harry and Oliver (on the picture from left to right with Donna Morgan, our Quality and Apprentice Training Manager) have missed many opportunities available to others in previous years, by being furloughed from work, having to endure remote access learning for all associated college academic studies, overcome and endure strict social distancing protocols whilst working and training onsite at Lattimer, along with further college Covid related issues and disruptions following the return of teacher training focused lessons provided on the college campus.

All of them have succeeded and come through these challenges and are now passing out as fully fledged time served apprentices, destined to take up their respective roles and challenges of skilled setter operatives within Lattimer.

We wish them all good luck for the future as they embark on a new chapter in their career.

Well done and a massive congratulations from all of us!

Christie Fundraiser

Our Sales Team Leader, Simon Waterhouse, has been part of a team which has raised over £44k for the Christie’s charity.

Simon’s friend Brad was recently diagnosed with osteosarcoma – a type of bone cancer. Doctors warned that Brad’s leg may have to be removed, however, as a result of the treatment received at the Christie hospital in Manchester, the tumour size has been significantly reduced and can now be removed with an operation.

To express the gratitude to the work undertaken by Christie’s for Brad and many others in the same situation, a fund raiser was organised and Simon with his friend Andy decided that a sponsored 50 mile run (yes 50 miles !) would be a suitable challenge.

The pair ran the 50 miles (almost two marathons) in just under 17 hours, leaving from Runcorn and running to Brad’s home in Conwy in a single day. The challenge began at 3am and was completed just before 7pm with lots of support and encouragement along the way.

A staggering £44k has been raised so far, with additional donations arriving daily, an amazing achievement, very well done to both.

Mould Holder Review

At Lattimer we are constantly reviewing the performance of our products to ensure they deliver the high quality and superior performance expected by our customers, handling the increased machine speeds in their stride.

A recent design review undertaken on the standard Mould Holders L23-960-1 and L23-1013-1 identified a number of opportunities for improvement to the casting design that delivers an increase in strength and durability, without affecting the cost.

These updated holders now significantly reduce the breakage in the lower arm, specifically in the high stress areas, modifying the radii joining the arms to the main body coupled with an increase in section thicknesses in very specific areas.

At the forefront of design, Lattimer constantly deliver an innovative range of products, always giving our customers the edge.

Laura Jackson wins Engineering Apprentice of the Year

Laura Jackson joined the Lattimer Training Academy in autumn 2019 and has been going strong from day one. Her great commitment, attitude and ability towards her studies, combined with her excellent understanding and passion for engineering have won her this accolade.

This was the first time a level 2 apprentice has won the Apprentice of the Year Award at Southport College, but to us it came as no surprise. Laura shows skills and attributes within the engineering environment befitting her years.

Congratulations to Laura Jackson on winning such a prestigious award during a very uneasy and somewhat restricted year of learning.

Well done again, and here is to the next few years of continued success.

Student Engagement Award

Lukas Allsworth wins the Student Engagement Award from Southport College! Well done Lukas!

Lukas is now a fully qualified Quality Engineer after completing a 4 year apprenticeship at Lattimer. During this time, Lukas volunteered to speak at many events, advising young people what it is like to go into an apprenticeship rather than going straight from school to university.

Here is what he had to say:

“During the 4 years that I have spent at Lattimer, I have had to make it clear to people outside of the company how working for Lattimer is a privilege and brings a sense of pride. When I first applied for my apprenticeship, I had no idea what to expect. I believed I was getting thrown into the deep end of it all but with the experienced personnel on site, I swiftly settled in and was happy with my work progress.”

“I then thought to myself how people who don’t have apprenticeships think that it is all about working and not knowing what they are doing but they would be wrong. Lattimer had set a very good example for how a good apprenticeship should run, taking into account both the work and college aspects.”

“It was important to me that I let as many people as I could know about working at a place such as Lattimer and how the structure of the apprenticeship is well thought through and that there is always somebody there to help them through their work.”

“Personally, I couldn’t have completed my apprenticeship or got this award without the help of Alan Andrews, our Apprentice Training Officer at Lattimer. He puts so much effort into all of his apprentices and ensures that he has the best possible people on the apprenticeship scheme. I owe everything to him and want to thank him for that.”

Lattimer presented with Queen’s Award

The Queen’s representative and Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside Mark Blundell visited Lattimer to present the award to the firm’s senior management, employees and apprentices. The presentation marked a significant moment in the company’s 76-year history following 40 years involvement in the glass container industry.
“This is an incredibly proud moment for each and every person who has contributed to the success of Lattimer since its inception in 1942. In our opinion there is no greater accolade or seal of approval than that of Her Majesty the Queen, on the advice of the Prime Minister. We have enjoyed many successes over the years including the development of ground-breaking products, however this moment ranks amongst the best. We are indebted to previous generations and their contribution in building the firm to where it is today. As the current custodians of the Lattimer brand, we are determined to ensure it continues to prosper and thrive for the next 70-years and beyond.”
CEO Stephen Waterhouse

Lattimer is now permitted to fly The Queen’s Award flag outside its head office and use the Queen’s Award logo on all company stationary for a period of five years.

New Pressure and Range Tracking System

Lattimer are collecting real time data from its key component parts on key feature characteristics when in manufacture. The image is showing a basic graphical interpretation of the pressure data collected for the broaching of the spline features on our Neckring Mechanism Cylinders. The data allows us to monitor the process regarding the pressure exerted upon each pull, which over time will allow us to make informed decisions on wear and tear of the tooling being used and aid reviews of suspicious hardness in casting parts. It provides traceability to the batches of parts being manufactured, along with evidence of the control and management of the parts during their machining processing. This is the first of many such electronic visual systems to be introduced throughout our key manufacturing areas.

Lattimer wins Queen’s Award for Enterprise

UK based precision engineering business Lattimer has secured the UK’s most celebrated business accolade after winning the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade.
The £12.2million turnover business underwent a rigorous assessment from the Queen’s Award Office involving a 10,000-word submission and financial vetting to prove ‘steep’ year-on-year international sales growth over the past three years.
Senior management are now to attend a Royal reception at Buckingham Palace in June this year, hosted by The Prince of Wales, where they will receive a ‘Grant of Appointment’.
Lattimer Holdings CEO Stephen Waterhouse said the achievement was only possible due to the immense effort of the company’s 114-strong workforce as well as past generations who had all contributed significantly to the firm’s success.
“It is a huge privilege and honour to receive the Queen’s Award for Enterprise,” he said. “It truly doesn’t get any more high-profile or prestigious than an official endorsement from Her Majesty the Queen. There is an enormous sense of pride and satisfaction amongst our entire team, who thoroughly deserve this acknowledgement. It simply would not have been possible without the commitment, desire and dedication of our exceptional workforce, many of whom have come through internal apprenticeships and have been with us their entire careers.
“This award is the result of many decades of hard-work and determination. Lattimer has had to evolve and remain resilient since setting up in 1937. It took many years to build a reputation as a solid British manufacturer before a major breakthrough in the 1970s when we helped a local glass container company solve a problem in their production process. This innovation was so successful it inspired Lattimer to develop other products for the worldwide market. Following the early successes of the original Lattimer “Pusher” and “Belt Arm” in 1977, we grew to be a world leader in the design and supply of high quality ‘IS variable equipment’.
“We have remained at the forefront of the ‘design and build’ of components and assemblies for the glass container industry ever since. However, this has required energy, ambition and resource. We have always aimed to innovate and develop new and improved manufacturing techniques to stay ahead of competitors, while keeping an eye out for opportunities in other industrial sectors where our expertise is also relevant.
“Today we export to all four corners of the world, from Asia, Africa and Europe to the Americas and Australia. We manufacture more than 20,000 component parts, through a number of different machining processes including milling, turning, mill-turning and grinding. As a result, Lattimer is now in a stronger position than ever before in its 80-year history, with growing order books and a world-wide reputation for engineering excellence.”
The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise is an awards programme for British businesses and other organisations which excel at international trade, innovation or sustainable development. The scheme was established as The Queen’s Award to Industry by a royal warrant on November 30, 1965. They are the highest official UK award for British businesses.

Restructuring of Inspection Department

Lattimer have just completed a major restructuring of our inspection department with the introduction of a new Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) and Standards Room for gauge calibrations.

The CMM purchased is a top of the range Zeiss Contura RDS with a measuring range of X 700mm, Y 1000mm and Z 600mm. This machine increases our measuring capabilities allowing us to measure larger, more complex products, faster and more accurately and gives us the ability to report measured data in a more user friendly manner.

The Calypso measuring software supplied enables programming to be undertaken with or without the use of CAD data, a two way STEP converter allows Lattimer to create 3D Geometry from solid parts which can then be converted and used with our Solidworks design software helping speed up product development.

The machine is fitted with a tool change rack to enable measuring programs to run automatically without the requirement for manual intervention, speeding up measuring times and increasing throughput.

Lattimer recruits new apprentices

Southport’s largest engineering firm Lattimer has expanded its in-house training academy after recruiting three new apprentices.

New starters Jack Eckersley, Leah Sandwell and Harry Purcell will start a four-year training programme this month while studying at Southport College.

Lattimer is a world-leading £10million turnover precision machinist, making more than 20,000 components for the glass container manufacturing sector. It exports 96pc of total sales to all continents.
Lattimer managing director Mark Hailwood said it marks another significant leap forward for the firm’s training academy, initially set up in 2010.

He said the base now trains 16 apprentices with five recently qualified recruits. Around 25pc of Lattimer’s current workforce has come through the internal apprenticeship programme.
Machinists Alan Andrews, John Harris and Phil Dewhurst - with more than 120 years combined engineering experience - are responsible for delivering training.

“In the next year our apprentices will have a thorough introduction to engineering processes both academic and practical,” said Mr Hailwood. “The apprentices will attend four days a week at Southport College and one day a week at Lattimer for practical hands-on training, for a total of 26 weeks. They will be assessed and trained in a multitude of important engineering disciplines including manual milling, centre lathes and grinding. They will gain further knowledge of basic tool making which will include fixture design and manufacturing before being released onto the main workshop. Another key responsibility will involve learning about health and safety which is of paramount importance to our industry.

“Our apprentices will benefit from guidance from our highly experienced training team who worked on equipment ranging from jig boring to CNC machines. An essential aspect of training also involves encouraging apprentices to think for themselves and take professional responsibility. This is an extremely important period in their development where they will gain a solid foundation.”

Jack Eckersley, 19, from Ormskirk, joins Lattimer with previous experience working for a diesel pump refurbishment company in Burscough. “When I was at college I met with Lattimer apprentices who told me about the variety of learning opportunities and different skills they were taught,” he said. “This was reinforced by the lecturers who had also visited Lattimer. When I saw Lattimer was advertising apprentice positions again it seemed like a great opportunity to expand my skill set.”

Motorbike enthusiast Leah Sandwell, 17, from Kew, Southport, left school 12 months ago. “I developed an interest in motorbikes at a young age and I have always had a dream of build one myself,” she said. “Due to that I became interested in manufacturing and maintenance. I am now passionate about proving a career engineering and manufacturing is just as attainable and suitable to women as it is for men. I’m now really excited to learn about many different forms of engineering techniques and to see industry in action.”

Harry Purcell, 16, from Churchtown, Southport, is a school leaver with a passion for engineering. “I have always been keen to follow a vocational path and learn a valuable trade rather than go down a purely academic route,” he said. “I am focussed on achieving my full potential and I believe my combined study at Lattimer and Southport College will give me a strong grounding in engineering.”

This month Lattimer also welcomes back returning apprentice Daniel Raven, from the University of Huddersfield, where he studied Mechanical Engineering. He will take up a position in the ‘Operations’ Department’ supporting and managing the introduction of new products.

Meanwhile, former Lattimer apprentice and HND Engineering student, James Davidson has been enrolled on a leadership and management training course after excelling in his role as Team Leader of MX Section. James recently won the HNC General Engineering award at the NWTC (North West Training Council) 2017 awards after achieving a distinction in his course.

Mr Hailwood said: “Our training academy plays a fundamental role within our business helping source and nurture local engineering talent for the future. Our new intake and continued investment in recently graduated apprentices helps illustrate Lattimer’s ethos for developing talent. We are passionate about unearthing new engineers who will drive our business for future generations. The majority of our workforce have risen through apprenticeships or internal training and we see this as a fundamental part of our business model moving forward.”

Never Say Never, Sporting Success

During our summer shutdown Ian Fitzpatrick of Lattimer had the honour of representing Great Britain in the European Masters Athletics Championship held in Aarhus Denmark. Attended by 42 countries and over 4500 competitors.

Ian raced in the 400 and 800mtrs and such was his performance in the 400mtrs that he was selected to run the 4 x 400mtrs relay.  Ian has been involved in mountaineering for most of his life, and his running career started only 4 years ago when he attended an Alpine mountaineering introduction course which enabled him to climb his first 4000mtr peak.

One of the criteria’s for this was to be able to run for 45 mins. At the time he could not do this. So this made him join a local running group, which to cut a long story short, spotted his natural talent for speed.

This year is only his second year of track running having spent the first two years road and fell running. Ian said “It’s been an amazing couple of years, I’m now receiving training from a professional coach and have my fiancé as a running partner. Herself a well established 400mtrs hurdler with international status.”

The Masters running enables age related running.  Once over the age of 35, runners are grouped in 5 year groupings. Ian being 54 ran in the M50 category.  Competing at the top of his age group it was always going to be a tall order to reach any finals. However, he did manage a massive PB in the 400mtrs and had a good solid heat in the 800mtrs.

The icing on the cake, however, was to be selected for the GB M50 men’s relay team. Running the last leg (the glory leg) he managed to bring the team home just outside medal position in 4th, but again running another PB.

Unfortunately, Masters Athletics is not subsidised so all costs of travel, accommodation including the purchase of the GB kit (alone being excess of £250) has to be paid by the individual. It is a huge commitment. Training takes up a minimum 3 nights a week at a local athletics track. Usually taking up 3 hours each time.

Next major competitions on the horizons are the European Masters indoors in Madrid during March 2018. Due to time and money constraints Ian will only be competing in the 400mtr for this one.
Saving holidays and money to compete at the World masters champs in Malaga in September 2018. Where he’ll be again competing in the 400 and 800mtrs and maybe the 200mtrs. By then he’ll be 55 so a relative youngster, competing at the bottom of his age group and hoping for higher placing and who knows maybe a medal.

Apprentice of the Year 2017

A young Southport engineer training at one of the UK’s leading precision engineering firms has secured a special award for outstanding performance. Lukas Allsworth, of Tarleton, who began training at Lattimer in September 2015, has been named the Engineering Apprentice of the Year 2017, at Southport College’s Apprentice Star Awards during National Apprenticeship Week.

The ceremony held at Clouds Restaurant, Southport College, saw a number of students commended for exceptional effort and commitment to their course.  Lattimer UK Managing Director Mark Hailwood said Lukas thoroughly deserved the award for excelling in his apprenticeship within the firm’s specialist training academy which initially opened in 2010 and currently has nine apprentices within its ranks.

He said Lukas is a terrific example of the top rate talent within the region, as the firm now gears up for applications for its 2017 intake.  The academy is set to take on up to four new apprentices this year. The Southport-headquartered firm designs and manufactures more than 20,000 different component parts predominantly for the glass container manufacturing industry. It has ramped up turnover to £10.6million, following 30pc growth in the last 12 months.

“We are thrilled that Lukas has secured this award, as he has proved to be a first-class apprentice applying his intelligence and ability throughout,” said Mr Hailwood. “He has committed himself to the craft of precision engineering and embraced the ethos of our business. By combining practical work from the Lattimer Training Academy with theoretical studies at Southport College he has been able to charge up his engineering knowledge. If he continues to develop in the remainder of his apprenticeship he will become a well-rounded and highly skilled Engineer, with a strong foundation of skill and understanding.

The high skill academy was set up to uncover the next generation of precision machinists, just like Lukas, from across the North West. Now more than 40pc of our current workforce have come through some form of internal apprenticeship course.”

Apprentice Lukas Allsworth said the balance between high-intensity practical work at Lattimer Training Academy and the more academic work at Southport College proved highly stimulating.
“It has been a brilliant decision to go down the apprenticeship route,” he said. “I feel the time I have dedicated will really pay off. I am mastering a broad variety of machining processes from milling and turning, to mill-turning and grinding, these machining skills will enable me to come out of my apprenticeship and be ready to go straight into a production role.

“The apprenticeship is well structured providing a good balance of practical and theory work between Lattimer and Southport College. It is providing a real insight into the engineering sector which is a varied and interesting field. I feel very grateful to have been able to carry out my training at one of the UK’s leading precision engineering firms where I have learnt from highly experienced craftsmen. Lattimer is such an interesting business making complex component parts which are exported all over the world.”

Lattimer was recently named a ‘National Champion’ in the European Business Awards for its impressive international track-record, which sees a total of 96pc of total sales attributed to overseas markets. Meanwhile, its training and apprenticeship work has also been commended by the EEF with a Future Manufacturing award for ‘Developing People’. Lattimer CEO Stephen Waterhouse said as a global leader in precision engineering Lattimer requires highly-skilled staff with passion and enthusiasm for the business.

“We deliver focused and intense in-house training, where longstanding machinists have converted to full-time training and mentor roles. This ensures our trainee recruits receive guidance from the firm’s most experienced members. The merit in this is that Lattimer knows its apprentices will be able to operate all complex CNC equipment on completion of their training. Precious manufacturing knowledge is also passed down through generations. The academy is an essential ingredient ensuring Lattimer maintains its international reputation for delivering high-quality, cost-effective and reliable products.

“We are extremely passionate about skill development,” said Mr Waterhouse. “Aside from our in-house Academy, Lattimer also supports the Engineering Development Trust’s ‘Year in Industry’ programme taking university students on one-year placements and identifying relevant in-house projects where they can gain valuable skills and experience. In addition, Lattimer also sponsors a Merseyside and North Wales schools’ manufacturing competition, organised and run by the local Rotary Club, designed to stimulate interest in careers within the sector. The project sees teams from around seven schools spending a day in Southport where they undertake a competition to build an item from limited materials and instructions.”

Southport College principal John Clarke said: “Currently there are nearly 600 Apprentices supported by Southport College across 15 different sectors. Employers such as Lattimer recognise the importance of having and a well-trained and qualified workforce.  Southport College’s Apprenticeship Star Awards Evening has been the perfect opportunity to recognise the achievement and dedication not only of the Apprentices themselves but also their employers, assessors and tutors who have supported their learning.”

Nicola Hurst; Director of Teaching & Learning and External Relations said: “Lukas is a very polite and well-mannered student that showed a keen interest in engineering right from the start of the course. He had excellent attendance and punctuality throughout the whole year. He put a great deal of effort into both his practical and theoretical work throughout the year and as a result developed crucial skills that he has been able to apply in work. He has also been involved in recent Apprenticeship open evenings, giving up his personal time to speak to young people about his experience both at the college and working in an engineering environment.”

CREATING A NEW VISION FOR GLASS ENGINEERING
